George Arnold was one of the family leaders of the 14 Families that established St. John Colony. He was born in April 1845 in Georgia. We do not know his parents’ names or any of his siblings at this time.
He married Margaret Arnold in 1870. Trying to determine Margaret’s maiden name was intriguing. In the 1880 Census, Charity Gibson (Margaret’s mother) was listed as George Arnold’s eighty-year-old mother-in-law born in Alabama. Margaret’s second maiden name was Russell in the Texas Deaths, 1890-1976, records in 1927 when their son, Tom Arnold, died. Margaret’s third maiden name was Jenkins in the Texas Deaths, 1890-1976 records in 1929 when their daughter, Amanda Arnold-Carter, died. Trying to ascertain Margaret’s maiden name at this point is impossible.
George and Margaret had 12 children in 27 years. They were named Synthia Arnold, Charity Arnold, Lilly Arnold, Sarah Arnold, Amanda Arnold-Carter, Lulu Arnold, Thomas Arnold, (Doc/Doctor) Arnold, George W Arnold Jr, Henry Arnold, Mary Arnold, and Willie Arnold.
1880, 1900, and the 1910 census records show George Arnold and his family living in Caldwell County. He and Margaret owned and farmed fifty-five acres of land in St. John Colony. Being formerly enslaved, he and Margaret could not read or write.
He might have died in Lynton Springs, Caldwell County, Texas, but the date or place of his burial is unknown.
